Delaware’s College Enrollment Down 12% Amid COVID-19 Pandemic, Ranks No. 3 Nationally

Both the University of Delaware and Delaware State University have experienced a decrease in first year undergraduate enrollment in the past two school years, bringing the state of Delaware to a 12% decline in new enrollment from 2019 – ‘21.

The coronavirus has caused high school graduates to rethink their options after graduation and, in turn, have caused first year undergraduate enrollment numbers to decrease throughout the nation. According to Student Loan Hero researchers, “college enrollment among first-time undergraduates is down 3% amid the pandemic” with the state of Delaware being one of the most effected as it sits at number 3 out of all 50 states, only topped by Alaska and Wyoming.

The 2019 – ‘20 school year saw a combined total of 6,240 newly enrolled undergraduate students in the state of Delaware. The University of Delaware’s main campus welcomed a total of 4,617 students in the ‘19 – ‘20 school year while Delaware State boasted an institutional record of 1,142 new freshmen. Just one year later, a noticeable decrease in new enrollment could be seen, as UD saw a difference of 443 students, enrolling just 4,174 new freshmen. DSU experienced a difference of just 141 students, bringing in 1,001 new freshmen for the 2020 – ‘21 school year.

The 2021 – ‘22 school year saw enrollment numbers jump back up at DSU as the Fall ‘21 semester produced another historic achievement for the student body, surpassing their previous record of 5,054 in 2019. Last fall saw the largest student body ever at Delaware State’s institution with a total of 5,649 students. Additional categories that produced record setting improvement are undergraduate students (4,484), graduate students (801), international students (623), and online enrollment (317). Fall ’21 also saw an increase in new freshmen, climbing from 1,001 to 1,023.

The success of Delaware State University could be due, in part, to the expansion of their campus, when they acquired Wesley College (now named DSU Downtown) during the summer months of 2021. Wesley undergraduates account for 334 new enrollees at DSU.

The University of Delaware also saw a rise in new student enrollment as they matched their 2019 – ’21 numbers, enrolling 4,617 undergraduate students in the Fall semester of 2021. Of these undergraduates, 1,646 are Delawareans and 2,971 are nonresidents.

Biles Making a Mental Health Statement

Simone Biles, a world renown gymnast and 5 time Olympic Gold Medalist has decided to remove herself from the Tokyo Olympic Games to focus on her mental wellbeing.

The decision comes after Biles withdrew from the Olympic team final after just one rotation. She said, "No... Mental's not there, so I just need to let the girls do it and focus on myself." The Olympian expressed signs of anxiety in a press conference after a silver medal performance from Jordan Chiles, Sunisa Lee, and Grace McCallum in the Olympic Team Final.

Biles was viewed as the favorite to repeat as the individual all-around champion.

The gymnast can be defined in many ways: a role model, a star, the GOAT, etc. But, before anything else, she's human. "We have to focus on ourselves, because at the end of the day we're human, too. So we have to protect our minds and our body, rather than just go out there and do what the world wants us to do."

QB1: CFB Rankings

With the 2021 class of college quarterbacks gone to the NFL, much room is left for the next class of quarterbacks to jump the ranks.

The likes of Trevor Lawrence, Mac Jones, Justin Fields and Zach Wilson have gone on to play in the NFL, leaving room for Junior Spencer Rattler to jump to the CFB QB1 spot, leading the charge as a Heisman frontrunner. The Oklahoma Sooner threw for 3,031 yards and 28 touchdowns with a 67.5 completion percentage.

Sam Howell follows closely behind Rattler as one of the top quarterbacks in the nation. With more yards, more touchdowns, and a better completion percentage (on more attempts), the 2021-2022 CFB season looks to be a dog fight for the top spot between this UNC Tar Heel and Oklahoma Sooner.

Who else will make their come up or comeback this upcoming season?

After a spectacular season that saw him in the top 10 quarterbacks list last season, can Miami's D'Eriq King make his comeback from a tragic ACL recovery and fill the number three spot for our top quarterbacks list?

Could Clemson's DJ Uiagalelei continue his rise to fame, picking up where he left off late in the season last year?

For more information, take a look at some of my Spotlight articles from last season. And be sure to look out for my Spotlight articles during the '21-'22 season!

NCAA Clears NIL Policy

After years of revoked scholarships and rewards for reaped benefits that college football players felt deserving of, the NCAA has finally cleared student-athletes to make money from their name, image, and likeness.

Players such as Reggie Bush (USC), who had his Heisman revoked, Edward De La Hayes (UCF), who had his scholarship stripped, Brandon Wimbush (Notre Dame), founder and CEO of MOGL, and many more athletes have been on the front lines fighting for decades in an effort to allow for endorsement deals and other methods that would allow for payment of student-athletes.

Biden Makes Juneteenth a Federal Holiday

On Wednesday, June 16th, Congress passed a legislation which would recognize June 19, 1865, a date that commemorates freedom from slavery, as a Federal Holiday. The bill passed the House with a 415-14 vote just one day after the Senate unanimously passed the legislation.

President Joe Biden signed the bill today, June 17, 2021, making Juneteenth National Independence Day a United States federal holiday. Mr. President and Madame Vice President delivered remarks on the inception of this federal holiday.

President Biden's words connected with VP Harris's most memorable statement, "We have come far, and we have far to go. But today is a day of celebration." Recognizing this moment as "one of the greatest honors" of his presidency, Biden reflects on our nations past saying, "Great nations don't ignore their most painful moments," continuing with, "They embrace them." He said, "In short, this day doesn't just celebrates the past. It calls for action today."

Juneteenth makes the 11th annually recognized US federal holiday in history. It is also the first established since Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, signed into fruition in 1983.

East Coast Preparing for Juneteenth Celebrations

Juneteenth is a time celebrated by people of color all throughout the United States. Also known as "Emancipation Day," Juneteenth commemorates the official freedom from slavery on June 19th, 1865. The holiday is recognized as a Black/African-American Independence Day and is celebrated annually.

There are many ways that people celebrate this Independence Day, whether it be hosting an outdoor gathering or bringing black owned businesses together to celebrate all of the achievements that have been accomplished despite the generational setbacks and cultural disparities that have negatively impacted the black community.

This year, in 2021, there seems to be, what feels like, a coastal celebration. Many states up and down the Eastern Region of the United States have shared celebratory flyers that read "JUNETEENTH" in big, bold letters. Gatherings and business expos are being held all along the East Coast from New York to Georgia and move as far south as Texas.

Last year, Juneteenth flags could be seen hanging throughout Texas, over Fenway park and even over the US Capitol as they held a Juneteenth flag raising in recognition of the holiday celebration.

MLB Cracking Down on Cheaters

Major League Baseball has had it's fair share of scandals when it comes to cheating. From illegal steroids to scuffed baseballs and, now, today's "sticky stuff," it's evident that there's a sticky situation going on during this 2021 baseball season.

According to Sports Illustrated's Stephanie Apstein and Alex Prewitt, "80 to 90%" of pitchers are using sticky stuff to some degree. This sticky stuff allows for pitchers to put a better and faster spin on the baseballs, therefore, increasing the RPMs and allowing the balls to break harder and later. This is a major advantage for both pitchers (as this allows for a spin rate increase of up to 600 revolutions) and the defense as a whole as this allows for a more difficult pitch to hit, an easier ball to catch, and an easier ball to throw.

There are different spreads that pitchers use on their baseballs; it started off with a mixture of sunscreen and rosin and now has evolved into various forms of glue.

This dates back to as early as three years ago, in 2018, when Trevor Bauer (pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers who has been the center point of this cheating scandal) targeted the Astros for cheating. After a lack of reprimanding, the slinger proceeded to pursue what GolfDigest's Shane Ryan calls "one of the funniest, 'if you can't beat 'em, join 'em' moments in recent sports history." After practicing with pine tar on his baseballs, he watched his spin rate increase 400-600 RPMs within one to two years, making him one of the best pitchers in all of baseball.

Bauer said at the time, "If you just look the other way and you let some people do it, the people who chose not to do it are at a competitive disadvantage."

Jameis Winston's First Touchdown Pass as a New Orleans Saint🏈

Jameis Winston put the Saints back in the lead against his former team.

The middle of the second quarter saw the former Buccaneer tossing a 56 yard bomb to a wide open Tre'Quan Smith. This pass marks the longest TD pass of the season for the New Orleans offense.

Prior to Winston's touchdown, Drew Brees threw an interception that lead to a Tampa Bay touchdown. A reverse pass for a go ahead touchdown to Smith just may have been the spark they would need to send them into halftime on top.

Harden to Brooklyn👀🏀

The Nets just got better.

The Brooklyn Nets (7-6) have acquired All-Star SG, James Harden in a blockbuster deal.

This multi-team trade involves the Cleveland Cavaliers, Indiana Pacers, Houston Rockets, and the Brooklyn Nets. As a result, the Houston Rockets have received Victor Oladipo, Dante Exum, Rodions Kurucs, four first round picks, and four pick swaps.

Brooklyn participated in the largest trade deal in Nets' history in an effort to obtain a "Big Three" in Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durant, and James Harden. Combined, these three players have been named 24 time all-stars. Brooklyn's big three have built up impressive accolades that would bump them to, arguably, the best team in the Eastern Conference after these roster changes.

The Cavaliers have acquired Jarrett Allen and Taurean Prince out of the trade, while the Pacers receive Caris Levert and a second round pick.

After 3 weeks of play, the Nets currently sit at 7th in the east. Can Brooklyn take advantage of this gamble and compete for their first Finals Championship title since 1976?

PWI vs. HBCU

The Difference

Graduating high school students often search for the college/University that best fits them and makes them feel most comfortable.

When it comes to choosing colleges there are several factors that come into play. These factors include:

•Size
•Location
•Scenery
•Education
•Price
•Culture

"Culture" may, arguably, be the most important factor when it comes to choosing the college that makes you feel the most comfortable. This factor breaks down into two separate subsets of colleges: PWI (Predominantly White Institutions) and HBCU (Historically Black Colleges/Universities).

PWI's are, in general, larger educational institutions whom typically claim to be "diverse". Though they are majority Caucasian, they do provide Minority students with safe spaces (though very little), where they can hang out with people who look like them and gain a sense of comfortability. Campus life as a minority is what you make of it, as is at any college. Though it is predominantly White, a lot of these higher educational learning environment do have a wide range of clubs and organizations that band minority groups together, such as BMU (Black Men United), BSU (Black Student Union), LASO (LatinX American Student Organization), and many, if not all, National Pan Hellenic Council organizations (known as the "Divine Nine") as well as Multicultural Greek Council organizations.

HBCU's have a very rich historical background to them and engrain a sense of Pride in the students that attend the school. This sense of pride is one that cannot be found anywhere but an HBCU. These predominantly African-American Institutions provide a space throughout the country where a Black men and women are no longer the minority, they are the majority. Students here are provided with and know the history of their College or University, while most PWI students couldn't tell you the date their institution was built, let alone accredited. These higher educational environments have some of the same clubs and organizations that are provided at PWI's including Academic & Service oriented clubs and the Divine Nine, in which most were founded.

PWI's and HBCU's have a lot of similarities but also differ in things like Culture, Student Population, Campus Size and Funding. It's upsetting to know that HBCU's just don't receive as much funding from State governments as PWI's do. All too often, must Institutions depend on donations in order to remain accredited as a College or University due to a lack of funding from the state.

Catching Injuries; Not Passes

Throughout the NFL teams seem to be catching the injury bug.

This year, with the lack of off-season training as a team and the closing of workout and training facilities, NFL players had to find new alternatives to staying in "Football shape" over the 7 months extended vacation they had due to COVID-19 and the social distancing sanctions created because of the epidemic.

Training camps have started and pads are now clashing! However, things aren't looking so good for some teams. Players were already given the chance to opt out of the season, which has already caused some teams to lose their standout players, such as the Super Bowl Champions' (Kansas City Chief's) 2019 leading rusher, Damien Williams. A lot of teams are now seeing players sitting out of practice due to lower body injuries (that we can only assume are from lack of proper training) and finding themselves unsure of if they'll be able to play in the season opener.

Now that we are less than one week away from the season opener, NFL hopefuls and viewers can only hope that teams, such as the Philadelphia Eagles who've found themselves battling injuries since they won their first Super Bowl title in 2017, can stay COVID free and stay healthy.

Below is a list of every team facing injuries from USAToday:

NBA Playoffs to Resume Under New Commitments

On Wednesday, August 26 NBA Playoffs were postponed due to a Boycott started by the Milwaukee Bucks, as they refused to take the court for game 5 of their Eastern Conference Matchup. Word had spread throughout the League and the sports all throughout the US as three WNBA teams, five MLS teams and there MLB teams Boycotted in solidarity with the Wisconsin based team.

NBA Players have agreed to return to Playoffs under new circumstances. These athletes have made it clear that they want to play but the actions of law enforcement and lack of accountability that have occurred this year are bigger than basketball. A saddened Chris Paul, NBPA union President, states "We're all hurt, we're tired of just seeing the same thing over and over again and everybody just expects us to be okay just because we get paid great money." There's no question that these players want change. The OKC start Point Guard continues on to say, "we're going to continue to play, but we're going to continue to make sure our voices are heard."

The NBA has agreed to the following three commitments before Playoff continuation set to start on Saturday:

1. To immediately establish a social justice coalition with representatives from players, coaches and governors that will be focused on a broad range of issues, including increasing access to voting, promoting civic engagement, and advocating for meaningful police and criminal justice reform.

2. In every city where the league franchise owns and controls the arena property, team governors will continue to work with local elections officials to convert the facility into a voting location for the 2020 general election to allow for a safe in person voting option for communities vulnerable to COVID.

3. The league will work with the players and their network partners to create and include advertising spots in each NBA Playoff game dedicated to promoting greater civic engagement in national and local elections and raising awareness around voter access and opportunity.

Can You Hear Us Now? NBA Boycotts Unfold

NBA players and stars have been vocal about the racial injustices and wrongful shootings of Black men and women by law enforcement. Players and coaches of the NBA have spoken out on camera, kneeled and have, even, replaced their last name with quotes and words, such as "I Can't Breathe" or "Equality" on the back of their jerseys. After seeing little to no change in the actions and accountability of law enforcement, NBA teams have decided to take a drastic approach.

On Wednesday, August 26, the Orlando Magic and their coaching staff walked out of their locker room to an empty court. The Milwaukee Bucks have decided to Boycott Game 5 of the first round of the Eastern Conference Playoffs. In light of this, Game 5 has been postponed for the following Playoff matchups:

Bucks - Magic
Rockets - Thunder
Lakers - Blazers

However, talk of a Game 1, Semifinals Boycott has leaked. According to ESPN's Marc Spears, the Toronto Raptors and Boston Celtics met Tuesday night to discuss their plans for Thursday nights matchup.

This comes after the disturbing video involving an altercation between the police and Jacob Blake, a man whom was shot 7 times in the back in front of his three sons.

After undergoing surgery, Mr. Blake is currently in stable condition and has received a medical diagnosis that states, "It is going to take a miracle for him to walk again" (USA Today).

The Movement to Teach Black History in Schools

Teens are leading a movement to teach Black History in every grade.

In elementary, middle and high schools throughout the Nation we are taught the history be of America. The United States has a rich, deep rooted past filled of successes and failures; good and bad. Though we are all taught American history from a very early age, how much of our history do we really know?

A movement to teach Black History in every grade level, from elementary through high school, has been put in motion after a young student stated, "she didn't feel black enough to own African-American history as her own" reported CNN journalist, Scottie Andrew. It took traveling 1,000 miles to the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington D.C. for, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Early College student, Alana Mitchell to get a glimpse of the other side of American history.

More students and, even staff have spoken up I'm agreement. Mr. Andrew quotes activists voicing, "Black History doesn't need to be relegated to a week in February, or one unit in US history. It doesn't even need to be restricted to Social Studies. US schools have failed in the past to support their Black students -- now is the time to center young, Black Americans in their own stories".

So far, according to CNN, there has been one guaranteed guaranteed course added to the curriculum with a chance for expansion.

PA Unemployed Residents to Receive an Extra $300

From April to July, citizens of the United States who lost their jobs due to the pandemic were granted an extra $600 on top of unemployment. After that program had ended at the end of July and the pandemic continued on, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) was looked upon to provide more assistance after declining to extend the Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation Program, which was looked upon as, in Governor Tom Wolf's words, "a lifeline to Pennsylvania families".

On Tuesday, August 25, "the state of Pennsylvania agreed to administer a lost wages program for it's citizens who are Unemployed due to COVID-19," according to FEMA in a press release. Currently, thirty other states have joined the program that uses a substantial amount of money from FEMA's Disaster Relief Fund to aid those families in need.

According to Gov. Wolf, it could be weeks before families begin to receive the bonus funds due to the process of creating a new system to distribute payments from the disaster relief fund to the Federal Lost Wages Assistance program.

The Process Failed...

After 7 years (2013-2020) with the organization, the Philadelphia 76ers have decided to part ways with long time head coach, Brett Brown.

Since 2013 the former Head Coach of the Sixers has spouted the line, "Trust the Process." Brown, a very decorated Australian Head Coach and Assistant Coach of the NBA, has, once again, displayed a disappointing performance to a fan base that hasn't seen an NBA title since 1983.

One year after semifinals contention with the current NBA Champions and, what seemed like, a smart move in trading their 2019 leader in playoff points scored, they earn a playoff birth once again and end their 2020 season after four first round playoff games against a long time rival in the Boston Celtics. When given the chance to defend the former HC, Sixers All-Star Center, Embiid, NBA Veteran, Al Horford and Josh Richardson (SG/SF), acquired from the Butler trade, all placed blame toward Brett Brown during Post-Game Interviews.

Under Pressure to No Pressure: A Bittersweet Moment in HIP HOP

It's a Bittersweet Moment when hip hop loses one of the most educational rappers in the industry.

2020 has been a frustrating year and only continues to disappoint with the news of the retirement of such an iconic hip hop artist. Rapper, Logic, has decided to walk away from rap after releasing his 9th and final album entitled "No Pressure."

The 30 year old rapper has decided to retire from rap in order to focus on "being a great father" to his newborn son, Bobby.

Through each concept album, Logic touches on topics that most new age rappers wouldn't take the chance to speak on, including religion, politics and mental health. The rapper, throughout his journey in the industry, has educated fans on the severity of real life issues while consistently creating billboard hits. This is what makes the entertainer such an ICON.
